FAQ

1What is Cleft?
A cleft is a gap in the lip and/or palate (roof of mouth) that happens in the early months of pregnancy.
2How does it affect children?
If left untreated, the baby will have severe difficulties breathing and eating. He or she will also experience more colds and ear infections. The child will have difficulty speaking and being understood.
3What can I do to help?
  • Refer someone who has cleft. We partner with Smile Train to facilitate surgeries for our cleft patients. For a list of requirements, see FAQ #3 here.
  • Your donation will allow us to provide pre- and post-op cleft care including housing, medicine, and special food. Your donation will also allow us to expand our screening efforts for children with cleft to more remote places in underserved areas.
